John Walton - Dangerous Teaching

Warning: Dangerous Virus Alert (

On July 17th this year (2013) Laidlaw College in Auckland, New Zealand, hosted Dr Walton to speak on Genesis.

Dr Walton's teaching is dubious and dangerous, as this CMI article on Walton's Genesis teaching explains. (Make sure that you also check out the above AiG article on eisegesis and the Genesis virus that I've linked to under the picture.)

It was a great disappointment to me that this event was held at Laidlaw and also that a significant number of churches throughout Auckland promoted the event.

Sye Ten Bruggencate in a debate with Paul Baird said the following:

Christians believe things that don’t make sense logically for example the miracles in the Bible such as the virgin birth etc. What would you say is the ultimate authority of the Christian – their own  reasoning, or the God of Scripture? As Christians are we the judge of Scripture, or is God’s Word the judge over us? Wouldn’t it make more sense to say that as Christians God should be the authority of our reasoning?

I've included this here because it gets to the heart of the matter in the whole creation vs evolution debate. As Christians the Bible is to be our ultimate authority, not the fallible words of men, and not our own reasoning independent of God. God calls every Christian to base all of their thinking in every area on the Scriptures and to 'lean not on our own understanding'.

Here's another question to think about: If the Bible clearly said evolution and deep time were not true, would you reject them, or would you doubt the Word of God? (Of course evolution is a modern word so it would be impossible to find the word evolution in the Bible, and when one looks at the Bible carefully it becomes clear that evolution and deep time are not biblical ideas.)

Could Dr Walton and scientists promoting evolution be wrong? Yes, they could. And according to the Word of God they are wrong because God cannot lie. Could I be wrong about that? No - because I base my thinking on this matter on the Word of God.

The New Answers Book 4 (NAB 4)
I just finished reading this book (Ken Ham - General Editor), and I'd like to highly recommend it. I've read book 1 and book 2 in the series which I also recommend. It always amazes me how despite having studied this topic for years I always find new things to learn.

One of the good things too about this book is that it is up to date and deals with some of the new challenges being raised by Bible skeptics. For example there is a whole chapter dealing with the tactics of the new atheists such as Dawkins and Kraus.

It was interesting that a few days ago a skeptic asked me, "How could Noah's Ark have floated above the highest mountains and the people and animals on board still be able to breathe at such a high altitude?" Then a few hours later I found that there is a chapter in the NAB 4 dedicated to this question!

The seeming dilemma is easily solved by realising the mountains before and during the flood would not have been as high then as they are today, and the chapter also explains that the question shows a basic lack of understanding of how physics works in relation to the atmosphere and air pressure.

The book also gives some of the latest evidences for a young earth and against evolution and millions of years. For example soft tissue and blood cells found inside dinosaur bones that are supposedly millions of years old.

The NAB 4 also explains how atheists and skeptics of biblical creation use rescuing devices to save their worldview. Worldviews are a key issue, and something that needs to be clearly understood. Evidence never speaks for itself and must always be interpreted - especially in relation to the distant and unobserved past.

To determine how things were created in the beginning we need a reliable eye-witness account. This will always trump supposed scientific evidence. And this is what the Bible is - the infallible eye-witness account of creation by the only one who was there, knows everything, and told us how he created everything in 6 literal days.

No matter whether you've been a Creationist for several decades like me, or whether you're relatively new to the creation / evolution debate, I encourage you to read this book. I'm sure you'll find it an interesting read that will show you that the Bible is totally reliable even in this age of skepticism where many think the Bible is an outdated book full of myths.

If you are a Christian I challenge you to get answers for your faith. The Bible says all Christians are called to share their faith. As it says in 1 Peter 3:15

"But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect"
