Boycott Halal New Zealand

Last week I wrote a blog on the topic of Boycott Halal. In this blog I want to look at the halal situation in New Zealand.

Welcome to New Zealistan

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark continued the tradition of NZ politicians selling their souls for the sake of the trillion dollar worldwide halal trade. (This article puts it at over 2 trillion dollars) "In the year to June 2011, New Zealand exports of halal-certified meat to Muslim markets were worth almost $490 million to the [New Zealand] economy."

Link to YouTube video FIANZ Halal Certification Documentary.

Halal Meat in New Zealand

The fact is that in NZ halal meat is being dumped onto the general market without being labelled. This is an affront to all non-Muslims, but especially Christians, and also to Sikhs, who believe that it is wrong to eat meat that has been sacrificed to Allah.

This issue is something every Christian should be concerned about - and the command to avoid eating meat sacrificed to idols is one of the few commands given to Christians in the New Testament in terms of food. It's so important that God rebuked two churches in the Book of Revelation, in part because they were eating food that had been sacrificed to idols.

"Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam,  who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality." (Revelation 2:14)

(See my previous blog Boycott Halal and Christian Voice's article Halal Meat: What is the Christian position?)

I believe a big reason for this rebuke is that eating food that has been dedicated to idols (and Allah is an idol) directly aids and abets those false religions. No true Christian with half a brain would send money to support Mosques in NZ - but buying halal is effectively giving money to Mosques and the accompanying sharia and Islamization of society that is inextricable from Islam. Overseas in countries like France it has been shown that some of the money from halal is going to known terrorist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas (Muslim Halal Food Sales Supporting Terrorism?) In New Zealand this may also be the case, as FIANZ (Federation of Islamic Associations New Zealand) supports the spread of Islam in NZ and overseas, so who knows exactly where their money goes? And it is a sizable amount of money. Currently the FIANZ are receiving over a million dollars annually. (They also donated $10,000 to the Labour party in 2008 - isn't there are a law against that? - See this Wikipedia article on FIANZ).

I'm not a lawyer but I seriously wonder if a case could be made for a law suit against the NZ meat industry for hoisting this scam on us and ignoring our fundamental religious rights. We have the right to not have another religion forced upon us in this way. Below is a screenshot from the Beef and Lamb NZ website:

How much is "a significant proportion"? 50%? 75%?

In order to avoid the problem all that the NZ meat board needs to do is ensure the labeling of all meat that is halal slaughtered even if it is later "contaminated" and therefore not technically halal. But they don't want to do that because it would cost a tiny fraction more and they think that not enough people really care about this issue. Well they are wrong - if more non-Muslims and Christians made their voices known on this then we could force a change. I encourage you to like the Facebook page 'Boycott Halal New Zealand' and to make your opposition to halal meat and halal products known.

Here is a chapter on the subject of halal lamb from the booklet 'Labelling Halal' by Stephen Green and Christian Voice UK:

When Britain joined what is now the European Union, Commonwealth countries like New Zealand found trade barriers against them and had to look around for new markets.  As a result, New Zealand now supplies a growing Muslim consumer base in the Middle and Far East.
We believe the New Zealanders developed the electric stunning method of slaughter, rendering the animal unconscious by electric shock, rather than by a captive-bolt pistol, especially to satisfy the halal requirements of their new Muslim markets.  75% of NZ lamb output is consequently now halal.
But no New Zealand halal lamb coming to the UK is labelled as such, so consumers do not know their New Zealand Sunday roast is more likely than not to have been ritually-slaughtered.
In an email, Meat NZ told us:  'It is not possible to provide with any precision a figure of how much New Zealand lamb, slaughtered in accordance with the Sharia, is exported to Britain.  As they share the same physical attributes, we do not differentiate between 'halal' and 'non-halal' product when compiling export statistics.
'We can confirm, though, that over 75% of New Zealand export registered meat processing plants are also halal certified and slaughter in accordance with the Sharia.'
It will not be good enough to tell the Saudi Arabians 'There is a 75% chance that the meat we are supplying you is halal.'  Meat NZ must know which is which and we are advising consumers to avoid NZ lamb until halal and non-halal joints are honestly labelled.  The British meat market would do well to avoid such obvious evasion.

Halal Certified Products / Outlets in New Zealand

This is what the halal symbols look like...

Here is a short list of some of the products / outlets to be aware of (I'll add more to this list as I become aware of them, and also the Boycott Halal New Zealand Facebook page has a lot more information).

McDonalds is Halal Slaughtered (But Not Halal Certified)

I emailed McDonalds New Zealand and got this response from them:

"Whilst we have no Halal-certified products or restaurants I can confirm that the McDonald’s standard supply line of beef has been slaughtered as Halal."

I can tell you that I'm not "lovin' it". Does the M stand for McDonalds or Muslims? In the USA a Muslim man sued McDonalds and paid out $700,000 for advertising their food as halal when it wasn't properly halal - so if that kind of thing is false advertising - then perhaps I could make a similar law suit against McDonalds NZ for selling us halal meat without telling us?

Nando's is Halal Certified

Nando's serve only halal chicken. I encourage you to boycott them and to email them to let them know you will be doing so. They have a website and Facebook page.

MARS Chocolate is Halal Certified

This includes not just Mars bars but also M&M's, Bounty bars etc. These products are imported from Australia where there is a much larger Muslim population than NZ.
Vegemite is Halal Certified

(There is a Facebook page 'DON'T PUT THE HALAL STAMP ON VEGEMITE' which so far has 5,625 likes - but they seem to have given up protesting it because the last post was in 2012).

Nurture Heinz Infant Formula is Halal Certified

There are many other halal certified products in NZ. It's not just the obvious things like beef and lamb kebabs from Turkish restaurants. I encourage you to boycott halal products and do your part in stopping the spread of Islamofascism in New Zealand. Together we can make a difference.

Debunking 9/11 Conspiracy Theories

"The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him."
Proverbs 18:17 (ESV)

"To answer before listening-- that is folly and shame."
Proverbs 18:13 (ESV)

When it comes to conspiracy theories such as 9/11 it is often the case that people that have bought into the conspiracies haven't looked closely at both sides of the argument.

In general though it takes more than just looking at the facts to believe or not believe a conspiracy theory - to believe conspiracies in general it takes:
  • A prideful attitude (I'm one of the few people who really understands what's going on and everyone else is wrong).
  • A lack of critical thinking. (A big issue as logic isn't taught in schools as a compulsory subject any more.)
  • A willingness or desire to believe the conspiracy despite little or no solid evidence.
  • A double standard in terms of how evidence for and against is evaluated.
  • A discounting of the massive amount of evidence against the conspiracy.
  • A latching on to minor apparent anomalies (which can be explained rationally with a bit of a closer investigation.
  • Circular reasoning (starting and ending by assuming what you are supposed to be proving).
  • A propensity towards confirmation bias (misinterpreting information in order to confirm what you already believe).

It's important that we debunk the absurd conspiracy theories around 9/11 because these ideas feed into the cause of Islamic jihadists. (Many Muslims believe that 9/11 was some kind of conspiracy). It's also important because we need to realise that our real enemy is not the US government, it's Islam. While it's true that the US government aren't exactly doing a brilliant job, they are not as sick as to kill thousands of innocent civilians just to have justification to go to war. That's Islam that teaches that it's fine to terrorize innocent people. (See my blog on the Quran here).

I highly recommend this video... How to Debunk 9/11 Conspiracy Theories.

This article is also very good...
Popular Mechanics - 9/11 Conspiracy Theories - Debunking the Myths.

As a result of me posting the above video and article and using the information in them to refute the arguments of 9/11 conspiracy theorists I've been accused of possibly working undercover for the US government! This has to be one of the most absurd accusations I've ever received! Here's the accusatory comment from Gregory...

UPDATE: Below are the results so far from one of the questions from the God or Absurdity Survey. (As you can see 35.1% of respondents said "No" to this question - i.e. they believe that 9/11 was not committed by Islamic terrorists alone, and so must believe in some kind of conspiracy related to this):

Boycott Halal

Halal food is everywhere! It's not just meat that can be halal but it's a wide range of products including things like soup, chocolate and yogurt.  Usually (but not always) halal food is labelled as halal such as the Cadbury chocolate bar below. (However, nowadays Cadbury seem to have removed the halal logos on their products, but according to their website they are still halal certified).

What is Halal?

Halal is an Arabic word which means "permissible" and in the case of food it refers to food that has been ritually slaughtered according to Islamic law (sharia). Animals such as cows, sheep and chickens are killed by having their throats slit. Usually the animals are hung upside down while still alive so that the blood can drain out. Sometimes they are stunned beforehand but often they are not, and it can take up to 2 minutes for the animals to die. (In New Zealand they are stunned but with a lower voltage than normal so that they are still actually alive when they are killed). While all of this is going on a Muslim priest prays in the name of Allah over the animals.

Why Boycott Halal?

- It's an inhumane and barbaric way to kill animals. (This is not the main issue for me though).
- A percentage of the profits from this trillion dollar industry ends up in the hands of terrorist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. (See this article: Can Buying Food Contribute to Terrorism?, and this 5 minute CBN video)
- Stop the Islamisation of the West (See this video: Geert Wilders Islam Warning to Australia)
- Stop the spread of Sharia (Islamic law, of which halal ritual slaughtering is a part. See Ban Sharia Law Worldwide)
- Christians are told to avoid eating food that has been sacrificed to idols and to eat for God's glory (1 Cor 10:19-33) - how can we do that knowing that the food has been offered to the false god Allah and that it is indirectly supporting terrorism?
- The issue of not eating food sacrificed to idols is so important to God that in the Bible it is one of the few commands given to Gentile Christians, and God rebuked two churches in the Book of Revelation for eating food sacrificed to idols. (Rev 2:14, Rev 2:20)
- This is an opportunity for Christians to be a witness and stand up for Christ.

My 10 Most Formative Books

Many books have influenced and formed my thinking, but below is a list of 10 that I've chosen as being the most formative.

1. The Bible

The Bible more than any other book has formed my thinking. Our thinking in every area should be based on the truth of God's word. When it comes to subjects that aren't directly addressed in the Bible we can still approach those issues with an understanding that all truth is ultimately God's truth and without God we couldn't actually know anything.

2. The New Answers Book 1 - Over 25 Questions on Creation / Evolution and the Bible (Edited by Ken Ham)

This book blew me away when I first read it as a teenager and it's still foundational to my thinking. It was called "The Answers Book" when I read it, but a year or so ago I reread the updated version and still got a lot from it. The book can be read online for free via the above link.

3. The Lie: Evolution / Millions of Years (Ken Ham)

Again - this book is another one that has shaped my thinking and helped me to understand why evolution is wrong and why God's word needs to be the foundation for our thinking in every area. As with 'The Answers Book' this book can also be read online for free via the above link.

4. Refuting Compromise - A Biblical and Scientific Refutation of "Progressive Creationism" (Billions of Years), As Popularized by Astronomer Hugh Ross (Jonathan Sarfati, Ph.D.)

This one goes more in depth and digs into the Hebrew and Greek and shows why 6 days means 6 days and why Hugh Ross and others in the Old Earth Creation (OEC) camp are wrong.

5. Already Gone - Why your kids will quit church and what you can do to stop it (Ken Ham & Britt Beemer)

I read this a few years ago and it helped me to further realise why the creation evolution issue is so important, and also why churches need to be teaching not just creation apologetics but general apologetics. Again this book can be read for free via the above link.

6. Always Ready: Directions for Defending the Faith (Greg L. Bahnsen)

I read this book after watching a lot of Dr Bahnsen's videos and listening to a lot of his audio teachings, and it reinforced my understanding of the importance of presuppositional apologetics.

7. Eternity in Their Hearts: Startling Evidence of Belief in the One True God in Hundreds of Cultures Throughout the World (Don Richardson)

I read this book years ago (as well as Don's other book 'The Peace Child') and it's shaped the way I think about missions and evangelism. God truly is at work in the hearts and lives of individuals and people groups around the world, and it's our job to help them connect what they already know about God to the gospel. This book contains many stories of people movements to Christ and how often missionaries got to remote peoples and found that God had already prepared them in some way to receive the gospel. On some occasions God told these peoples that a white man would come with a black book to tell them the truth about God. 'Eternity in Their Hearts' shows why it's so important to contextualise the gospel - a great example is the chapter in the book about Korea and how missionaries were initially using the wrong word for God, but when they started using the right Korean word for God they started to see thousands come to Christ. (However, this principle isn't always readily applicable - see Why Don Richardson Says There's No 'Peace Child' for Islam.)

8. Living Wisdom (David Riddell)

David Riddell is a theologian and Christian counsellor who has had a big impact on my life. The importance of beliefs and truth is clearly shown through this book, and through David's ministry. (Unfortunately the book is no longer in print, but the above link to David's website includes a store where many helpful resources can be found. Also see the Wisdom section of my website here.

9. In Six Days - why fifty scientists choose to believe in creation (Edited by John F. Ashton PhD)

The title sums it up well. 50 chapters, each written by a different scientist who explain why they believe in biblical creation (aka Young Earth Creation / YEC). The book can be read for free at the above link.

10. The Ultimate Proof of Creation - resolving the origins debate (Dr Jason Lisle)

I read this book about a year ago and it was the first book that got me onto presuppositional apologetics. It also has a few chapters on logic and logical fallacies that have been really helpful. See also my blog post The Ultimate Proof of Creation.

How about you? What would you say have been your 10 most formative books?
